What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Traditional SEO optimizes for one thing: showing up in a ranked list of blue links on a search results page. That model assumes a human is scrolling through results, comparing snippets, and clicking through.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) targets a different surface entirely — the answer itself. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews a question, there’s no list of ten links to scroll through. There’s one generated answer, and it either mentions your brand or it doesn’t.
Why this matters now
More buying research is starting inside AI chat interfaces instead of traditional search. If a prospective customer asks an AI platform “what’s the best [category] tool for [use case],” being the brand that gets named in that answer is worth more than ranking #3 for the equivalent Google query — there’s no scrolling required to reach you.
What actually influences GEO
A few consistent patterns from working across GEO client engagements:
- Citable, structured content. AI models tend to pull from pages that clearly state facts, comparisons, and definitions rather than pages optimized purely for keyword density.
- Off-page authority. Being mentioned and linked from sources the model already trusts (review sites, forums, industry publications) matters more than on-page tricks.
- Real community discussion. Reddit and similar community discussions show up disproportionately often as sources AI platforms cite — genuine, non-manufactured engagement carries real weight.
Where to start
If you’re only going to do one thing, audit what AI platforms currently say about your brand today. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity directly what they know about your product category and see whether you show up at all. That gap is usually the clearest starting point for a GEO strategy.
